DPS School Social Workers are an integral part of a multidisciplinary team whose task is to determine a student’s eligibility for special education services. When a student is suspected as having a disability that adversely affects his/her education, the School Social Worker conducts the initial assessment and comprehensive evaluation to determine the student’s eligibility for special education services as a student with an emotional impairment. After the School Social Worker and the other members of the team have completed their assessments, a MET team meeting is convened to share the results and make recommendations for eligibility.
According to State and Federal Laws, Emotional Impairment shall be determined through manifestation of behavioral problems primarily in the affective domain, over an extended period of time, which adversely affect the student’s education to the extent that the student cannot profit from learning experiences without special education support.
When Emotional Impairment is the determined disability, the School Social Worker provides direct service to the student utilizing specific intervention strategies to enable the student to profit from his/her educational experience.
