A. Philip Randolph Technical High School is the only DPS Career and Technical Center to offer the new Career Academy program, where high school students can earn a comprehensive high school diploma, an associate’s degree, heavy machine operator certification and paid internship through coursework in plumbing and pipefitting, HVAC, electricity, carpentry, masonry, horticulture and interior furnishings.

A. Phillip Randolph is an exclusive school producing highly qualified career ready students in the construction trades. Our courses are designed to give the student hands-on experience 5 days-per-week for the entire academic school year. This includes providing strong fundamental skills in the Construction, HVAC, Electrical, and Design career fields. First and foremost, students learn industry safety practices with an option to complete an OSHA-30 certification while learning technical writing techniques and extensive algebraic and geometric calculations supported by reading and math integration resources. Students will also learn to use basic hand-tools and modern power equipment using hands-on exercises in fully functional labs located in our Career Technical Center.
Students entering our programs will complete a wide variety of in-house and community projects that challenge students in real-world environments. Students are also scheduled to attend (minimum) two mandatory field trip visits to commercial construction sites within the greater Detroit area along with construction conferences and educational events. These field trips are mandatory and designed to enrich our students in project management and safety practices. The field trips will be tied to the curriculum and graded accordingly.
All Randolph CTC programs are MDE state approved and likewise supported by our leading industry partners within Detroit and the state of Michigan. During the second and third year of study, Randolph CTC strives to provide our students with construction related jobs being offered to us by the city, county and state. Randolph also provides language assistance for those students who are limited in English.
This is a 2-year program that prepares students with skills and knowledge for a career in residential and/or commercial carpentry. Projects include rough framing of structures, foundations and roofs; application of siding, installation of fixtures, and drywall. The students in this program build a 1200 square foot ranch home from the ground-breaking to the finished product when materials are available. Hands-on learning will be used for entry-level jobs in the construction industry or necessary lifetime skills.
Brick masons are highly skilled craftsmen who use specialized equipment and tools to mix mortar, bond materials together to form patterns, and lay out and construct foundations, masonry walls, patios, and other types of stonework. Upon completion, graduates may work as a mason helper, enter into an apprenticeship, or operate their own business.
Plumbing and Pipe Fitting
Students will learn to assemble, measure and construct piping and plumbing systems. Students will learn to install, repair, and replace piping systems. Students will fabricate piping materials for water, gas, drain, waste, and vent systems by installing hot water tanks, appliances, and fixtures. They will also learn how to lay-out plans for plumbing systems, maintain plumbing equipment, rough in piping systems, and install hydronic heating systems.
HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning)
Students test and service an air conditioning unit, perform electrical, mechanical, and maintenance tasks. They learn about the installation, maintenance, and operation of residential air conditioning and refrigeration systems. Principles of air conditioning and refrigeration are explained, including gas expansion and compression, heat transfer, evaporation, condensation, thermostatic control, motors and electrical circuitry. Students also learn the basic heat system which includes operating controls, carbon monoxide analysis, service maintenance, and installation.
Students are introduced to the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems. Students explore a variety of job tasks by wiring an actual house circuit and their electrical components. Students learn to read blueprints, design layouts, bend conduit, and test electrical systems. Students learn to install electrical circuits, doorbells, and lighting fixtures. Students also learn code requirements, electrical meters and their uses, electrical theory, Ohm’s Law, and service maintenance.
Computer-Aided Design (CAD)
CAD is highly affiliated with pre-engineering in the construction trades. CAD is designed to provide students with a foundation with the basic skills needed for success in modern engineering, design, and renewable technologies careers. Students will use CAD (Computer-Aided Design) in the creation of drawings and 3D geometry in both standard and metric measurements. Instruction will be given through a combination of lecture, demonstrations, and hands-on projects and experiments.
The Marketing course is designed to develop student understanding and skills in the areas of distribution, pricing, product/service management, promotion, and sales. Emphasis will be placed on the impact that customer behavior has on the implementation of marketing functions. Throughout the course, students are presented problem-solving situations for which they must apply academic and critical thinking skills. Participation in cooperative education is encouraged in order to provide the students the opportunity to apply newly acquired marketing skills in the workplace.
Army-Junior Reserve Officer Training Candidacy Course (JROTC)
The Army Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) is a program offered to high schools that teaches students character education, student achievement, wellness, leadership, and diversity. It is a cooperative effort between the Army and the high schools to produce successful students and citizens, while fostering in each school a more constructive and disciplined learning environment.
As the world’s population continues to grow, successful production of food and other agricultural products will remain a global issue for many years to come. Students will learn a successful business career in industries related to the food system, including: farm production, commodity marketing and processing, food manufacturing and distribution, food retailing. It also helps develop the vital decision-making skills, understanding of the agricultural-food system dynamics, and the leadership/management qualities in this field.

SIMLOG Heavy Equipment Simulation Lab
Each student will have the opportunity to develop real skills for high demand jobs by using computerized heavy equipment simulators. Students will learn to operate a Wheel Loader, Mobile Crane, and Hydraulic Excavator. Students will select one simulator and those who are successful in completing the rigorous coursework will receive a certificate in operating heavy equipment.
The Occupational Safety and Health Adminstration-30 (OSHA) course provides extensive knowledge in environmental, health and safety. This program is sponsored by OSHA and gives students a true understanding about all safety aspects associated with construction, manufacturing, transportation and the mining industries. It is a highly sought after certification by employers with no cost to our students.
Randolph’s Construction Skilled Trades Explorer program is primarily designed to do two things: first, expose high school students to many of the different construction skilled trades apprenticeship training schools that exist in the Metropolitan Detroit area and, second, to educate them about the career and financial advantages of becoming a journeyman by way of an apprenticeship program. As a result of their participation in this program, students learn about the technical and soft skills needed to be successful in the “real world” work environment of those who are pursuing a construction industry career.
Microsoft Office Specialist
Microsoft Office Specialist is a program sponsored by Microsoft Office and taught by Microsoft Office trained technicians. Students get real-world education, college readiness, employability training, and valuable credentials that are in demand now and in the future. This program ties in those skills needed for tomorrow, teaches tools for building technology skills, and provides industry-leading technology skills to help bridge the skills gap-TODAY !
About the Principal
Dr. George Peña has served in the secondary and post-secondary Career and Technical Education (CTE) field as a teacher and administrator. He also managed CTE apprenticeship, internship and work based learning programs that provide students with entry level work opportunities with the business industry. Dr. Peña also works hand-in-hand with our business industry, parents, staff and faculty, and community stakeholders in order to provide a rich and diverse learning environment at Randolph.
Dr. Peña has a passion to engage students by instilling leadership traits and critical thinking skills which inspire students to succeed, serve the community and prepare students to be globally competent in life. He wants students, parents and the community to know that the faculty and staff at Randolph are prepared to work together to set high expectations and provide active and relevant learning experiences for our students.
The mission of A. Philip Randolph Technical High School is to enhance student achievement by engaging construction trades and business students in industry standard training. Upon completing our fully academic integrated curriculum, students will be prepared to confidently and effectively compete in a global market while adding viability to the community.
The Name We Honor
The center is named for Mr. Asa Philip Randolph, a powerful leader and a tireless fighter for increased ethnic diversity in the labor movement. Mr. Randolph founded the International Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters. This organization helped workers in the Pullman Porter’s Union earn better wages and improve working conditions. Mr. Randolph was an inspiration to all who believe in equality and fairness in the labor movement.
Commitment to College Success
The center will provide a curriculum that will enable successful students to gain skills which will lead to practicum experiences, co-op work experiences, and apprenticeship opportunities which may lead to employment or higher learning opportunities.
Students in grades 10-12 must come to school in their school uniforms, which are various colors. Uniform colors for students in grade 9 are burgundy and khaki/black.
